What is a translation with apostille?

Foreign authorities often require a translation with apostille for the translation to be officially recognized. A translation with apostille certifies the authenticity of the official's signature for the foreign country. A translation with apostille comes into question if the target country is in Hague Convention.

Important: There are 2 types of apostilles. Please always check with the authority what they really require from you.

Otherwise one speaks of an over-certification or legalization. In the case of legalization or over-authentication, the document must also be legalized a second time by the responsible consulate in Switzerland.

Examples:

Case 1) Translation for Spain

Spain is in the Hague Convention.

        Step 1) First certify the signature at the notary's office.

        Step 2) Then take to the State Chancellery to get an apostille.

Case 2) Translation for China

China is not in the Hague Convention. 

        Step 1) First notarize the signature at the notary office.

        Step 2) Then take it to the State Chancellery to get legalization.

        Step 3) Take the document to the Chinese Consulate to get over-authentication.
